| Malaysia |
The background of the population of Malaysia is so diverse it leads to one of the wondeful things about this country its culture, Malays, people from India and China plus the colonial past gives a fascinating mixture that shows in the dress and of course in one of my favourite past times food, all forms of spice, satays, curries, chinese and even European. The cheapest way to eat is the hawker stalls where the food is freshly prepared as you wait, not keen on that try one of the myriad of restaraunts or cafes where you can sit back and enjoy not only the food but the activities around you.
Direct flights from London to Kuala Lumpur take approximately 13 hours, indirect flights may add 3 to 5 hours to this time but one advantage flying this way is you can travel from airports closer to home for example Emirates could even take a stop over in Dubai to break your journey even more. British Passport holders do not require a visa for stays up to 3 months, 6 months is the minimum validity required on your passport. Vaccinations always check with your medical centre before travel for latest requirements
There is much more to Malaysia than just shopping and beaches, it is no suprise that a lovely area of slopes and mountains is named Cameron Highlands after William Cameron who discovered this are in 1885. There have not been any reports of caber tossing but do try Cameron Highlands tea. You can get to it from either Kuala Lumpur 3hrs 30mins drive or Penang 4hr drive. The Taman Negra National Park is professed to be the oldest rain forest in the world, you acces it by river from Kuala Tembeling taking about 2 hours plus by longboat, you can shoot the rapids, cross the reputed longest canopy walkway at 45m high and 510m long in the world. Other activities consist of nature trails, jungle trekking, nature hides, it is recommended you are physically fit and able to walk reasonable distances also beware this is a jungle area and there will be insects and crawly things that may annoy you. Please treat the park with respect and care it is a protected area. If you prefer a more leisurely trip try the colonial Porteguese port of Malacca with its variety of architecture influenced by the Portugeuse, Dutch and British traders and military. Tour by trishaw or visit Jonkers Street famous in the Orient for its antique shops.
Climate, this is atropical country so the weather does tend to be warm and humid rainy seasons vary, on the west coast normally September to December East coast is October to February though many visitors reckon it mainly rains in the evening
